Week 1: Introduction

Introduction

Hi! My name is Stephanie and unlike many of the students from the University of Oklahoma I am actually from Norman, OK. I am in my senior year here at OU, and I am a Sociology major. I was in Business at first, but decided it really was not for me! I had always really enjoyed my sociology classes so I decided to change majors, and I really love it! The classes are really interesting and enjoyable. I just turned 22 years old this summer, and I can tell it is going to be a great year! I love to cook, bake, shop, and hang out with my family and boyfriend as much as I can!

I had the best summer I have had in a while. I absolutely love country music so for my birthday my boyfriend bought me OKC Fest tickets. It was sucha great show, and so much fun! I cannot wait to go again next year!

I have two dogs named Gracie and Bandit. Gracie is a silver toy poodle and she is the sweetest dog you will ever meet. Bandit is a black and white husky and he is also the sweetest. The cool thing about him is that he has a blue eye and a brown eye! He is not nearly as intimidating as he looks :)

I have two sisters who I am lucky enough to call my best friends! Michelle is 19 and is starting her sophomore year this fall at UCO. Jennifer is 16 on September 11th and she is a sophomore at Norman North this year. We are all so different! I am the oldest and definitely the more responsible one of the three as of right now! Michelle is the wild child, is obsessed with pickles, and is way taller than me. Jennifer is also taller than me, and she is the funny one of us three. She is crazy and loves to have fun, and is the sister that is good at EVERYTHING.
Plaza de Espana taken by Don Griffin
In July I was lucky enough to get to travel to Spain with my dad and two sisters. We spent 3 days in Sevilla, and a week in Barcelona. We got to see so many beautiful things, but my favorite was the Plaza de España in Sevilla (pictured above, I am the one in navy). It was so colorful and beautiful, it was definitely a highlight. I really, really love to travel. I love experiencing new cultures, and the way people live in other places. I find it fascinating, so I feel really lucky to be able to experience that this summer! Next, I would love to go to England or Ireland, or both! This fall I am looking forward to some cooler weather, the holidays, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1" (because I absolutely love the books, the movies, and Jennifer Lawrence), and becoming one semester closer to graduating! I am taking some pretty difficult courses so I am praying that I manage my time well, and do not get too stressed out! I have been trying to get in this class for about 2 years so I am really excited to be able to take it this semester!

  1. Hi Stephanie! I can really relate to your introductory post because I changed my major in the beginning the too! Luckily, it sounds like we both realized early that the things we thought we might want to do weren’t actually for us. Also, my family had a black toy poodle named Shadow while I was growing up! Toy poodles are precious. It’s very cool that you were able to travel abroad this summer and that you had such a good experience!

  2. Hey Stephanie! I am SO jealous of your travels! I would love to travel out of the country more! I can only imagine how beautiful Spain was! I also cannot wait for the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 movie! My boyfriend and I have gone to every Hunger Games premiere. It is kind of a tradition now! Also, your husky sounds adorable!

  3. What a lovely picture of that plaza, Stephanie! And I have to smile because one of my very favorite places in Italy is called Piazza di Spagna, just like that one is named - this one is in Rome, and it is such a fun part of the city. The so-called "Spanish steps" are there - and there's even a Wikipedia article about it:
    Piazza di Spagna

Sociology is a major that covers so many topics, and there's actually a lot of overlap between the fields of sociology and anthropology and folklore, so maybe you will find some overlap between this class and your other courses! It seems to me that people learn more when they can find overlapping connections... and I am curious to see what direction you will want to go in with the readings and the project for this class! Enjoy!!!

  4. Hi again Stephanie!

I love your introduction! You're very good with words! That's so awesome that you were able to travel to Spain with your family this summer! I got to travel with my family to France, Germany, Italy, and Austria last summer, so I can share in your joy! Learning about other people's cultures is fascinating to me too, that's why I chose International Studies as my major. It fits well! I hope you have a fantastic last year at OU and get through all of your tough classes!

  5. Stephanie,
Have you studied Spanish at all, or did you and your family go to Spain just for fun? I am jealous. I have always wanted to travel. My sister got to go to Ireland this past Spring, and it is beautiful! I am also a sociology major. You know, Dr. Hackney is teaching at an education abroad session in Ireland this summer. So, I would definitely look into that! Are you graduation in May?

  6. Hello Stephanie, congrats on your senior year. I have met many students that are originally from Norman and they all say they are one of the few from Norman. I think that is kind of crazy. I'm glad that you found a major that you truly enjoy. your Trip to Spain sounds great. I can't wait until I can start traveling. I have many siblings as well and it is crazy how different we all are. You would think growing up with them that you would be similar but that is far from the truth. Good luck on your senior year. I hope you enjoy it!!

  7. Hello Stephanie, wow your summer was amazing! It's been one of my dreams to visit Europe, especially España! It must be exciting but nerve wrecking to be a senior! I can't believe I'm getting close myself, and I feel that there is so much to do with so little time. Your puppies are ADORABLE, I cannot wait to get one, one day. :) I hope that you find a way to balance all of your difficult classes, and that you enjoy this one! Have a great semester!

  8. Hey Stephanie, senior year is exciting! I am jealous of your trip to Spain; it's cool that you got to spend so long in one area in Europe. That would make me want to go back! Traveling with family is always fun and it is cool that you are so close with them. OKC Fest was awesome, as someone who also grew up in Oklahoma it is exciting to see the city grow and host events like that! My favorite performance was probably Dierks Bentley, they were jamming out up there.

  9. Stephanie,

Congratulations on becoming a senior! I love your dogs! Huskies are my favorite dog, and I love when they have two different colored eyes. Your poodle reminds me of a toy poodle my grandmother had for a long time, she is precious! I also have a 16 year old sister, and she is a trouble maker. Haha. I am so jealous of your travels. I have a good friend who is studying abroad in Spain right now, and I can't wait to hear more about it!

  10. Your introduction here is awesome. I think it is hilarious that one of your sisters is obsessed with pickles! That is so random! Your husky Bandit definitely looks intimidating in that photo but I love huskies so much I just want to snuggle his fluffy face! It is awesome that you went to spain! I be it was just gorgeous there! I am in the same boat as you on The Hunger Games. I loved the books (well, except the third one. I hated the third one) I really enjoy the movies, and Jennifer Lawrence is one of my favorite actresses ever! I can't wait to read some of your stories!

  11. Stephanie,
I like that you included the pictures of your dogs. Bandit and Gracie seem like great pets. It's really cool that Bandit has differently colored eyes! Gracie's little sweater when she is out in the snow is fun, too. I bet your trip to Spain was a lot of fun! I've been before when I was 12. I hope to go to Europe again soon. There are so many awesome places there.

  12. Hey Stephanie! I love all of your pictures! Your dogs are absolutely adorable! I love that you are so close to your family! I think that always says a lot about a person (good things I promise). It is crazy that you guys go to go to Spain this summer! That is one thing I would love to experience more. Traveling the world and experiencing different cultures! That might be my personal heaven. What are you wanting to do with your Sociology degree? I took Sociology last spring and thought the class was very interesting! I am glad you have found something you are passionate about!

  13. Hi Stephanie, it's nice to meet you! I was at OKC Fest too! I thought they did a really good job with the festival, and I hope they do it again next year. Your travels in Spain sound like so much fun! I also love to travel. I had no idea this class was so difficult to get in to. I'm glad you are finally getting to take it!

  14. Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for a great introduction! It is evident that you are passionate about travel and your family, which is great. I am so jealous that you got to go to OKC Fest! I bought tickets the day they came out and later found out that I was going to be out of town. It looks like you had great seats and had an overall good summer. I’m not sure that I’m familiar with what sociology is. Do you know what you want to eventually do once you graduate? I always think it’s interesting to see the different paths people take out of different majors. Good luck with the rest of class!

  15. Wow, that’s such an awesome looking husky! Every time I see other people’s dogs it makes me really miss the labs I used to have until about a year ago. Anyway, it looks like the end isn’t too off for you in school. Sociology seems like a really interesting field to study, and it's great that you’ll be able to graduate with a degree in it. Do you have any ideas what you'd like to do after you’ve finished school?

  16. Hi Stephanie! Sounds like you have some really cool things going on. I heard OKC Fest was awesome, I'm so jealous you got to go! I was going to but I was in Dallas for the summer and couldn't make it up. Your dogs are so cute, too! That's so fun that you got to travel this summer, I love visiting new places! There's always something interesting and new to do. I've never been to Spain but it's on my list for sure. OMG I cannot wait for Hunger Games (Nov 21st come sooner)! Seriously I'm a huge fan and read all three books in a week... I am obsessed. Biggest girl crush is Jennifer Lawrence for sure. Maybe I'll see you at the midnight premiere! :) Have a great semester, good luck with everything!

  17. Hi Stephanie,
That's cool how you get to travel. I have some cousins that lived and Spain and they loved it. I'm very jealous that you have a husky, I have always wanted one but having a larger pet is kind of difficult to have in college. Also, I feel you about being the responsible sibling, my older sister is the wild child. Good luck with your last bit of college!

  18. Stephanie, it was so great getting to know a little about you from this post! I'm a psychology major and I absolutely love it, so I definitely understand your love for sociology! It is so interesting learning about the different facets of human nature and how people interact. I also loved the pictures of your dogs--so adorable. I've always loved huskies, and Bandit is absolutely beautiful. Finally, I think it's so great that you've gotten to travel! I hope you get to see sights from all around the world in the future. Best of luck with the rest of your college career!

  19. Hey Stephanie, I think its awesome that you care about your family as much as you do. I don't have any sisters, but I do have a younger brother. So I know how you feel about being the oldest haha. It's really nice and a big burden all at the same time. I hope that the rest of your senior year goes well. Good luck!
